Rug Placement Ideas for the Home

Rugs are a great addition to any home, they have the ability to transform a space, soften the appearance of a room, give a definition of your style, make a room feel cosier and some are even considered pieces of art that simply can be shown off to become the focal point.

Below we have some rug placement ideas to consider for placing a rug in your home.

Give your living room a refresh with some simple changes and updates

Expand the room with wide & striped

Choosing a wide rug that has bold stripes such as black and white zebra-esque one can give a space the appearance of being wider than it actually is.

Don’t obscure its beauty

Found a rug that you have fallen in love with, why keep it covered up and hidden by furniture. If placing under a table go for a glass one rather than the opaque wooden one. The best part; glass tables fit into both modern and traditional design.

Don’t be afraid of geometric

Geometric patterned rugs look brilliant in even the most tradition of places and can pair up great with both solid and patterned fabrics.

Get the size right

It’s important to think about the size of the rug and what you want it to cover and not cover. For example, if you are placing a rug in a dining room you will want to have enough amount of rug so that it spans a distance that will allow the chair to be slid in and out of the table without leaving the area of the rug and getting caught on the edge of it.

Define area of traffic

Use a rug to define the major traffic lanes in your home, using runners you can create interesting transitions between one place and another.

Caring for your sofa

Sofas are one of the most frequently used pieces of home furniture and with prolonged use it is inevitable that the fabric upholstery will start to show signs of wear and tear. Though this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy many years of service from your sofa, you just need to take care of it.

Before going on to how to care for the fabric and sofa its self a couple of major things to avoid are 1: try and keep the sofa out of areas that will receive prolonged exposure to sunlight as much as you can 2: If you have pets, especially cats then you will need to be very vigilant about what they do with their teeth and claws.

If you have a fabric sofa

Accidents are bound to happen and for the best possible clean nothing will beat a professional service. But if it’s only a small spill, tackling it yourself shouldn’t be too taxing. Firstly you must resist the temptation to rub the stain, this will only drive it deeper into the padding, instead wipe the sofa with a damp cloth (not a wet one) and then wipe with a soft dry cloth straight away.

Vacuuming or brushing the fabric weekly will help remove dirt which can add to colour fading and general wear and tear. Also do your best to keep the sofa away from sources of heat and light to further minimise fading.

If you have a leather sofa

Fairly impossible to avoid to a degree but do your best not to spill anything on the leather but if the inevitable does happen treat just like the fabric sofa; wipe the sofa with a damp cloth (not a wet one) and then wipe with a soft dry cloth straight away. Never use any solvent based cleaners and try and keep sharp objects or anything that could cause a cut or scuff away from the sofa as it could prove to be very hard to rectify.

If vacuuming, vacuum cracks and crevices gently.

What about the cushions

Remove all the cushions that you are able to, hold from the opposite side and then give them a good squeeze to give them a reshape. If you cushions are the same material either side then rotate them to spread the ware evenly over time. You should aim to repeat this process around once a month for foam cushions but for feather filled cushions try to do it weekly.

Give your living room a refresh with some simple changes and updates

The living room is heart of the home and deserves to look good; it’s where you, your friends and your family will spend a lot of their time. With some simple changes and updates you can freshen up the room but without breaking the bank, even a small edit can maximise the potential of an otherwise unutilised area or space and quickly start to transform your living room.

Hang some or more mirrors
An excellent alternative to hanging artwork, mirrors can be hung in groups to create the impression of more space and will reflect the opposite wall, great for breaking up a dark paint shade.

Use simple artwork grouped together
Get some low cost frames and use simple artwork such as a page from a magazine, a poster or a piece of artwork done by your child. Using various shapes and sizes work best, now group them together and arrange the frames to your liking. The idea is to create an arrangement that will create an impact rather than the actual piece of art itself; they are not the focal point here.

Give your existing furniture a makeover
A brilliantly easy way to give your room an update is to choose a simple piece of existing furniture and give it a lick of paint in a fresh new colour; make it stand out and want to be used. Have a neutral colour scheme try dark colour to add grandeur or if your scheme is fairly dark in theme give your piece of furniture a bold new colour such as neon blue or sunshine yellow to add bit of fun to the room.

Add some cactuses
The humble cactus is a brilliant house plant; they don’t require much maintenance and will last for years, couple that with placing them in their own individual glass jars, maybe with a little sand added and you’ve got your own little window in to another world that you can place on the window sill or mantel of your choice.

Lloyd Loom furniture

Stylish, comfy and more robust than rattan or wicker furniture, Lloyd Loom has a timeless quality that is perfect for any traditional or modern home, inside and out and has only grown in popularity since its appearance in the 1920’s.

The history of Lloyd Loom starts with Marshall Burns at the start of the 20th Century. Burns who had an involvement in developing wicker strollers and prams, which though very popular at the time where quite expensive and slow to produce and the rattan wicker used would often break and wasn’t the most comfortable martial for the use in prams. This prompted Burns to come up with a weave that was stronger, better looking and softer to the touch than rattan; and that’s what he did.

The year 1917 and after numerous experiments the ‘Lloyd Loom Weave’ was born by twisting and winding Kraft Paper, around a fine steel wire which then would be woven using a special loom to produce a fine regular and solid paper weave. This allowed the skilled craftspeople to shape the loom over the pram frames producing a smooth finish and cutting production times down considerably causing Burns to realise the potential of the weave in furniture production.

This takes us to May 1920 where after a tip off from the New York agent for W Lusty & Sons, Frank Lusty would seek out the British rights to the new Lloyd Loom weave and would go on to acquire the full patent in 1921 and start production the next year.

Only a few years after and the Lust Lloyd Loom factory in Bromley-by-Bow (East London) would cover seventeen acres of land and employ over 500 people, producing baby carriages to fitted interior furniture and by 1933 there were over 400 designs available in the Lusty Lloyd Loom catalogue.

At this time, it peek of popularity, the furniture was becoming a household name and you would find Lusty Lloyd Loom furniture almost everywhere from hotels, restaurants and tea rooms to cruise ships, ocean liners and even the zeppelin.

Durable, comfortable, elegant, smooth to the touch, easy to maintain and long lasting; It’s no surprise this furniture’s popularity is still strong and has not diminished over time.

Placing rugs on carpet

It might seem like the wrong thing to do or even a design blunder to add a rug to an already carpeted room, but done right it can create different sectors in a room and if you are renting a property it can improve the overall look of the room and add a little of your own touch to it.

When laying any rugs on or off carpet make sure it is not a trip hazard for anyone living in the property, especially for the elderly.

Areas of high traffic will benefit from placing a washable hallway runner which will prevent the carpet from gaining excessive wear.  These carpets, due to the repeated walking they will encounter will often shift so choosing one with a foam backing is ideal as well as picking a colour that will blend or complement your homes colour scheme of course.

Define sectors or areas of interest in larger rooms, for example place a rug in front of your mantel piece which houses all of your fancy ornaments to attract people to this spot, place under a coffee table or sofa to emphasise them in the room or if your dining room and kitchen share the same floor space use a rug to differentiate between them, giving them both their own personality and look.

Talking of dining rooms, these are great places to place a rug. Not only does it help define the eating area, if placed under the dining table and chairs it will also act as a great food cache stopping your main carpet being stained or damaged. It’s always cheaper to replace a rug rather than a carpet.

This idea of avoiding stains is also perfect for anyone renting a property and wants to avoid damaging or staining the carpets and potentially having to pay out for them.

Colourful patterned rugs will work well on carpets with a low pile and a neutral colour, the colour of carpet will create a framed look around the colourful rug. Do avoid mixing different textures of carpet and rug, for example if your carpet is high pile then don’t choose a high pile rug to place on it rather go for a low pile.

If you would like any more advice or information on choosing a rug, then please give us a call on 0115 9258347 or email us at info@kingsinteriors.com where a member of staff will be only happy to assist.

Choosing the right carpet for you

Choosing the right carpet for your chosen room is an important decision, the right choice can add a warm flare to an otherwise cold room or add the feeling of more brightness to a normally dark space, in fact it can even make a room safer for the little ones to run and play.

Because of the various possibilities carpets present, they are becoming increasingly available in more and more colours, materials and designs which can make the choice of buying one difficult at times.

Don’t worry though, we are here to lend a hand.

Which room will the carpet be in?

Considering what a major investment buying a carpet is, you will definitely need to know what room you will be wanting to put it in and the way that room will be used will also affect your choice.

For example a carpet for a living room will be under much more pressure and everyday use than say a master or spare bedroom which you could easily get away with having a lavish carpet in, are there going to be lots of kids using the room who are prone to falling down and injuring themselves. These are all things you will need to consider before even thinking about your carpet choices.

The maintenance factor

Now you’ve decided what room the carpet will be used for and how it will be getting used, it now time to think about the maintenance of it.

So it’s pretty apparent that your carpet will need to maintained over time and if you know it will be facing large amounts of foot traffic or the kids will be using it as the main play room then it’s almost certain you should go for a easy to maintain one.

As there are a lot of different materials to choose, the easiest way to go about finding out how a carpet will need to be maintained is to simply ask a salesperson when purchasing your carpet, any reputable salesperson will be able to provide you with the information that you need.

As a general rule though, textured types tend to be best for resilience and not showing up footprints but as mentioned always get advice, there might be factors that you have not taken in to account.

Getting Your Small Space Ready for the Holidays

Whether you’re hosting a large holiday dinner, a festive cocktail party or a casual brunch, the key to getting the most out of your space this summer is with a flexible mindset.  Use these tips to get inspired for this year’s summer activities and to plan ahead for the Christmas period:

Rearrange

Rearrange your furniture to limit crowding and ensure there’s enough space to make you and your guests comfortable. A sofa with a sturdy structure and movable backrests is perfect for a number of guests at one time. Have fun decorating your space for the holidays, but make sure there is enough room on counters, shelves, and side tables for your company to place plates of food and drinks. Think of unique solutions to maximize your space by having items serve double-duty on the day of your gathering. Try clearing off a shelf on a bookcase to create a temporary bar or snack station.

Making mealtime easy

Consider using a transforming table that can be extended to full size at mealtime to seat everyone while they eat, but can be tucked away or used for a different purpose when not in use. If you can look past the formalities of a sit-down meal, putting out a number of small plates around the room or having guests grab food buffet-style from the kitchen is a fun and social alternative to crowding around a table.

Living Room Trends for 2016

The New Year is the time when most homeowners think about a quick home makeover as they do their best to keep their home as up to date as possible.  This includes incorporating decorative pieces and design elements that can keep up with the rapidly changing trends. In this blog we take a look at a few trends that will do just that.

Sustainable Design

This generation are turning towards a cleaner, greener and more planet friendly life, regardless of whether they choose to mention their opinions on problems such as global warming etc. Nothing needs to be wasted, and with a little DIY paired with some creativity you can produce some real gems for your living room. Vintage is also in at the moment, this includes antique wall signs, decor and accessories so put them at the top of your list.

Organic Decor Choices

Following on from sustainable design, there are plenty of ways in which your living room can be made more natural and less, well not natural. Add awesome greens, living wall to living room, maybe bring in a side table or coffee table with a live edge or turn other organic materials into cosy and pleasing pieces of furniture.

Define Your Own Style

Personal choice is increasingly becoming the style and bringing your own style into your living room brings that extra touch, making it more homey and cosy. In 2016 you will see this with local designers and homeowners coming together to create a personalised that brings two or three unlikely, individual styles. Styles like Scandinavian will continue to be present in homes globally, touches of tropical charm and vivacious prints will provide this wonderful alchemy of the exotic and understated.
