Lloyd Loom furniture
Stylish, comfy and more robust than rattan or wicker furniture, Lloyd Loom has a timeless quality that is perfect for any traditional or modern home, inside and out and has only grown in popularity since its appearance in the 1920’s.
The history of Lloyd Loom starts with Marshall Burns at the start of the 20th Century. Burns who had an involvement in developing wicker strollers and prams, which though very popular at the time where quite expensive and slow to produce and the rattan wicker used would often break and wasn’t the most comfortable martial for the use in prams. This prompted Burns to come up with a weave that was stronger, better looking and softer to the touch than rattan; and that’s what he did.
The year 1917 and after numerous experiments the ‘Lloyd Loom Weave’ was born by twisting and winding Kraft Paper, around a fine steel wire which then would be woven using a special loom to produce a fine regular and solid paper weave. This allowed the skilled craftspeople to shape the loom over the pram frames producing a smooth finish and cutting production times down considerably causing Burns to realise the potential of the weave in furniture production.
This takes us to May 1920 where after a tip off from the New York agent for W Lusty & Sons, Frank Lusty would seek out the British rights to the new Lloyd Loom weave and would go on to acquire the full patent in 1921 and start production the next year.
Only a few years after and the Lust Lloyd Loom factory in Bromley-by-Bow (East London) would cover seventeen acres of land and employ over 500 people, producing baby carriages to fitted interior furniture and by 1933 there were over 400 designs available in the Lusty Lloyd Loom catalogue.
At this time, it peek of popularity, the furniture was becoming a household name and you would find Lusty Lloyd Loom furniture almost everywhere from hotels, restaurants and tea rooms to cruise ships, ocean liners and even the zeppelin.
Durable, comfortable, elegant, smooth to the touch, easy to maintain and long lasting; It’s no surprise this furniture’s popularity is still strong and has not diminished over time.
